Two carved companions, keeping your stories
Hand-carved Marapachi figures, the wedding dolls of South India, stand at either end of a textured metallic base marked with Yin and Yang: a his-and-hers pair that holds your books and a quiet idea of balance.
Product OverView
In South Indian homes, Marapachi dolls are gifted at weddings: a carved couple standing for prosperity, fertility, continuity and togetherness. Udhbava brings that pair to the bookshelf, setting them at either end of a base that carries the Yin and Yang. The result is a his-and-hers object about interdependence, not separation.
The figures are not treated as nostalgia. Darkened by hand, they carry an almost archaeological depth, as if they had surfaced from another era with something to guard: stories, memory, knowledge, and the books placed between them.
Beside first editions, on a study console or within a library, the pair does its daily work while holding a meaning worth explaining to a guest. It is tradition meeting modern artistry without either giving way.
The pair also carries an idea central to Udhbava: classical forms are companions to live with, not relics to be stored. A Marapachi couple, usually brought out for weddings and festivals, is given a daily role in a reader’s life. For a couple setting up a home, a family library or a collector of Indian craft, it makes a meaningful wedding or housewarming gift. Its symbol of partnership is seen every day, not once a year.
Design Details
The composition is symmetrical but not identical: a male and a female Marapachi figure, one at each end, facing the space where the books rest. Between them, a pair of softly curved wooden book supports carries hand-painted botanical vines that seem to grow through the structure, softening the upright figures with an organic line.
Beneath, a richly textured metallic base bears the Yin–Yang motif. It is the conceptual anchor of the piece: two distinct forms in complement rather than opposition. The dark, hand-finished figures, the painted supports and the metallic base give the pair three distinct surfaces held in one composition.
Raw Material & Craftsmanship
Crafted in antiquated wood with visible texture, the bookends keep the grain and tactile warmth of timber that has aged. The Marapachi figures are hand-carved and given a dark, hand-finished surface that lets the grain read through. The book supports are painted by hand with botanical motifs, and the base is worked to a textured metallic finish, adding weight and sheen beneath the carved wood.

FAQ’s
A few things worth knowing before you choose, commission or gift a piece from Udhbava.
Yes. Every creation is handcrafted with care and attention to detail. Many pieces are made in limited quantities, and some involve artisan-led production, from hand-carving and hand-painting to embroidery and silk inlay.
Because each piece is made by hand, often from old wood, vintage textiles or natural materials, slight variations in colour, texture, finish or appearance are natural. Grain, patina and the marks of the hand are part of the character of an artisan-made object. They are not defects.
The studio works mainly with heritage and natural materials. These include century-old and reclaimed Burma teak, rosewood, tea tree wood and padauk, marble, granite, brass and glass, and vintage Kanchipuram and Banaras silks. For Sutra, the fabrics are linen, hemp linen and handwoven cotton. Each product page lists the materials used for that piece.
As our products are handcrafted and produced in limited quantities, availability may change without prior notice. Some pieces, particularly in Udhbava Reclaimed and the carved tables, are one of a kind. Use Enquire Now on any product page to check current availability.
