Amma, written again and again in the wood
A dramatic slice of tea tree wood, darkened and polished, inscribed repeatedly with ‘Amma’ in a Tamil-Brahmi inspired script and grounded on branching roots: a table that reads as an ode to motherhood and memory.
Product OverView
Few words carry the emotional weight of ‘Amma’. Across generations and languages, it is often the first word of comfort, belonging and unconditional love. This tea tree table turns that intimate word into a work of sculptural heritage.
Inscribed across its surface in a script inspired by ancient Tamil-Brahmi, the word gives the piece the aura of something excavated from a forgotten civilisation and reimagined for the contemporary home. It is made for collectors who look for meaning in objects, and for homes that value story and emotional resonance over décor: an ode to motherhood, to Tamil civilisation and to the enduring poetry of the handmade.
The script is a deliberate choice. Tamil-Brahmi is among the earliest scripts used to write Tamil, known from ancient cave inscriptions. Writing ‘Amma’ in a form inspired by it ties one of the language’s most intimate words to its oldest written roots. The piece can be read on several levels: as a tribute to a mother, as a meditation on language, and as a sculptural object for a collector’s home.
Design Details
The inscriptions repeat across the top with a meditative rhythm, almost like a chant carved into wood. The repetition speaks of continuity: mother as memory, mother as language, mother as origin. Through the centre runs a natural fissure in the timber, crossing the script like the passage of time, imperfect and raw. Below, the rugged sculptural legs give the inscribed top a grounded, earthy counterweight.
Raw Material & Craftsmanship
The tabletop is a natural slice of tea tree wood, darkened and polished to reveal its ancient grain and weathered textures. The base is formed from the tree’s own branching roots, grounding the piece in the earth from which it came. The inscription is the hand’s contribution: nature, language and cultural memory brought together in one material.

FAQ’s
A few things worth knowing before you choose, commission or gift a piece from Udhbava.
Yes. Every creation is handcrafted with care and attention to detail. Many pieces are made in limited quantities, and some involve artisan-led production, from hand-carving and hand-painting to embroidery and silk inlay.
Because each piece is made by hand, often from old wood, vintage textiles or natural materials, slight variations in colour, texture, finish or appearance are natural. Grain, patina and the marks of the hand are part of the character of an artisan-made object. They are not defects.
The studio works mainly with heritage and natural materials. These include century-old and reclaimed Burma teak, rosewood, tea tree wood and padauk, marble, granite, brass and glass, and vintage Kanchipuram and Banaras silks. For Sutra, the fabrics are linen, hemp linen and handwoven cotton. Each product page lists the materials used for that piece.
As our products are handcrafted and produced in limited quantities, availability may change without prior notice. Some pieces, particularly in Udhbava Reclaimed and the carved tables, are one of a kind. Use Enquire Now on any product page to check current availability.
